- Apartment Problems Role Play: Go to Google Images to search for images of common apartment problems that a landlord would be responsible to fix. For example, a broken heater, a broken door, a leaking toilet, or a clogged drain. Print one image to represent each problem. Have the class practice a dialogue together for each problem. Have pairs of students come to the front to choose a problem and practice a dialogue.
- "Call the Landlord" or "Do it Yourself"? Discuss each of the following situations and decide if you should "Call the Landlord" or "Do it Yourself": a lightbulb is out, the bathtub won't drain, the kitchen is dirty, a mouse is inside, the heater isn't working, the toilet won't flush, I need a sofa, I have cockroaches, the refrigerator stopped working, the electrical outlet doesn't work. If appropriate, explain where a nearby hardware store is located that would have items such as lightbulbs, mouse traps, cockroach bait, or a toilet plunger. Role play going to the store to ask "Where are the lightbulbs?" and understanding a response such as "Over there, on aisle 8, at the top."
