Morphology is the study of how words are formed through combing smaller meaningful word parts. Inflectional morphemes such as -s, -ing, and -ed carry grammatical meaning. Derivational morphemes change a root word's meaning or function. For example, the suffix -ly changes an adjective to an adverb, and the prefix un- means "not." Learning to recognize common morphology chunks is an important part of developing foundational reading skills. The Level 4 lessons give students practice reading words with grammatical endings, as well as root words with suffixes and prefixes.
